How to maintain hub motors

May 28, 2024

Hub motor: The motor is integrated into the wheel of an electric bicycle. The hub motor is like the heart of an electric bicycle. Its biggest feature is that the power, transmission and braking devices are integrated into the hub, thus greatly simplifying the mechanical part of the electric vehicle. Since the in-wheel motor works in a harsh environment and is exposed to various influences such as water and dust, during daily maintenance of electric vehicles, regular maintenance of the motor is also required to ensure that the electric vehicle has a longer life.

1. Identify sounds

The sound of the normal operation of the motor should be a small "rustling" sound. If you hear obvious noises or abnormal vibrations during riding, you should turn off the power for inspection.

2. Avoid water accumulation

When riding on the road in rainy days, you should avoid waterlogged roads to prevent water from entering the motor and causing it to rust.  Even if the waterproof rating of the motor reaches IP67/68, the situation of the motor being immersed in water for a long time should be reduced.

3. Avoid overloading

Overloading an electric bicycle will cause great damage to the motor. Not only will the motor be deformed, but overloading the motor will cause the motor to heat up, and in severe cases, the motor will be damaged.

4. Regular inspection

Check the motor regularly to see if there are any loose screws, and tighten the loose screws in a timely manner. For electric bicycles with a chain, the chain should be lubricated regularly to reduce wear on the motor.
